Transumbilical Breast Augmentation (TUBA)
Breast Enlargement with Minimal Scarring!
Transumbilical Breast Augmentation (TUBA), or belly button breast augmentation is a fairly recent method of laparoscopically inserting breast implants though the belly button, creating a breast enlargement with minimal scarring.
The only incision to be made with this particular, and highly specialized type of breast implant procedure, is a 2 cm one at the navel. This is how the breast implants can be placed without creating any scarring at all around the breasts.
It is an expensive procedure, though it is possible to get this type of surgery cheaper abroad.
Typical countries in Europe offering affordable surgery are Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Belgium and Croatia, while, more convenient for US residents, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and Argentina have some superb breast augmentation surgeons. Also popular for Transumbilical Breast Augmentation are Malaysia, India, Thailand and South Korea.
What are the Benefits of Transumbilical Breast Augmentation?
The fundamental benefit of transumbilical breast augmentation is that there is very little scarring. However, studies have also shown that there is a decreased risk of complications affecting the ability to breast feed.
How is Transumbilical Breast Augmentation performed?
From the navel, a tunnel under the skin via the subcutaneous fat is created, using an endoscope, a tube with a camera and a light. This allows the breast surgeon to watch the procedure on a monitor. A saline breast implant(empty) is then moved up this tunnel to its desired position.
The final stage of Transumbilical Breast Augmentation is where the saline implant is inflated with the saline solution, and then the incision at the belly button is sutured.
Is Transumbilical Breast Augmentation right for me?
Although the idea of breast implants without scarring sounds ideal, Transumbilical Breast Augmentation does have its critics. For one thing, the operation is so specialized and highly skilled that it is generally extremely expensive.
More importantly, because the positioning of the breast implant is done quite remotely from the breast area, getting the shape and appearance of the breast right is necessarily more complicated. It also makes any revision of the breast surgery quite problematic. This is something that you need to take into consideration.
The fact that TUBA makes using saline implants the only option is also considered by many surgeons to be a disadvantage.
It is quite likely that the reason you are considering cosmetic breast surgery is because you want to improve the shape and form of the breast. Assuming this is the case, it makes sense to make this your first consideration, tempting as it may be to select TUBA because of the level of scarring.
If you do choose to have TUBA surgery, it’s especially important that you select a surgeon skilled not only in the field of breast augmentation, but specifically within this specific technique.
What are my options?
Silicone gel implants are out-of-the-question with Transumbilical Breast Augmentation, as they could not be fitted through this tunnel, so the only option is saline implants, which are filled with the saline solution after positioning behind the nipple.
And although submuscular implants are possible with Transumbilical Breast Augmentation, it is more complicated than placing the implant above the muscle, so most surgeons will prefer not to make the procedure any more difficult than needs be.
However, you will be able to choose the size and shape of the implants, as I am sure you would expect.
What are the Risks?
In addition to the normal risks associated with breast augmentation, or indeed any other form of surgery, Transumbilical Breast Augmentation does pose its own set of risks.
Certainly there have been a fair few patients who have been unhappy with the results, generally because of the implants being poorly placed, often too high to appear natural. Because of the method of this type breast implant procedure, it is easy to see why it may get more than its fair share of failures.
The surgeons who do specialize in Transumbilical Breast Augmentation claim that the surgeons who are critical of TUBA as a method of Breast Augmentation are simply not skilled and experienced enough at it.
This is a fair argument that is difficult to refute. However, it does highlight that you should only consider Transumbilical Breast Augmentation with a surgeon who is extremely skilled and experienced with this procedure.
How much does Transumbilical Breast Augmentation cost?
As with all surgery procedures, your fees for Transaxillary Breast Augmentation will take into account the level of skill required for the procedure, the expertise of your breast surgeon and also the local market forces which dictate how much can and should be charged for an operation.
Due to the skill required of your cosmetic surgeon, you should expect to pay more than you would for standard breast augmentation. It is possible, however, to travel abroad and get the treatment for a considerably lower price. Countries such as the Czech Republic, Belgium, Singapore and Malaysia are all known for their skilled breast surgeons.
