Breast Enhancement
Also known as the Boob-Job, this is a surgical procedure to enhance both
size and shape of a woman's breasts.
There is now a wide range of breast enhancement procedures, from enlarging the breasts using implants (breast
augmentation), to areola
reduction and nipple
correction.
Breast enhancement is generally done for one of four reasons: to correct an asymmetry of breast size, to restore
breast volume following pregnancy, the enhancement of the profile of a woman who feels that her breasts are too
small, and also for reconstructive surgery following non-cosmetic breast surgery.
During the breast enlargement procedure, implants are placed either under the breasts or beneath the chest
muscles, to enhance the figure. Women often choose this to look better in clothing and increase their wardrobe
choices, and there is also evidence that women are choosing this kind of cosmetic breast enhancement surgery to
increase their chances in the employment market!
Often referred to as a "boob job", the procedure often has a great impact
on a woman's self-confidence. However, such benefits seldom come cheap, meaning that many women find themselves
looking into the idea of breast surgery abroad in order to find the best prices. Favourite countries for
getting affordable breast implants are the Czech
Republic, Poland and Hungary. Further afield, many people choose to get great savings by having
their boob job performed in Thailand, India, or in South America, Argentina and Mexico.

Women who have a long-standing dissatisfaction with their breast-size, or who want to enhance and improve breast
size after child-birth or weight loss, or women who just want to improve their appearance or boost their confidence
may all benefit from breast enhancement surgery. Also, many women opt for this form of cosmetic breast surgery to
correct uneven or deformed breasts.
It is important that the breast enhancement patient has realistic expectations about their surgery. A common
misconception is that breast augmentation can be a substitution for a breast lift, which is not the case, although the two procedures can be
combined. If the issue that you would like your surgeon to address is sagging boobs, then breast enhancement
surgery will not fix the problem. In fact, when the patient's breast are already sagging, introducing implants will
make the problem worse.
The procedure involves placing implants underneath the breasts, or underneath the muscles in the chest.
There are different types of implant, and you will discuss this with your cosmetic surgeon. The most well-known
breast implant technique uses the inframammary incision, where the incisions is made in the crease below the
breast. Other options for the surgeon are through an incision from the base of the breast to the nipple, or round
the areola, as when correcting nipple placement.
There are also new developments that enable the surgeon to perform the breast enhancement procedure without
scarring. Two of these are Transumbilical Breast Augmentation, or
TUBA, and Transaxillary Breast Augmentation.
Another technique that is growing in popularity is Breast
Augmentation using Fat Transfer, where fat, harvested from the patient during Liposuction, is transferred to the breasts.
The breast enhancement procedure requires only an overnight stay in the cosmetic surgery clinic, and will take
place under general anaesthetic.
Generally speaking, the breast enhancement procedure will give you a maximum increase in breast size of two to
three cup sizes. Again, you will discuss this with your cosmetic surgeon, prior to surgery.
Be cautious of going for extra large implants, as they can cause their
own specific problems, such as stretchmarks, and an increase in the chance of shifting.
Breast enhancement is a very established cosmetic procedure, so complications are extremely rare, and are in
fact at an all-time low. Modern breast implants are very safe, nowadays, and surgeons very experienced with this
kind of surgery. Of cause, you must discuss with your surgeon any other health issues that may affect things. Also,
you can read our article "Risks Of Cosmetic
Surgery" for more details.
At first, after the breast enhancement operation, your breasts will feel swollen and more firm than you would
expect. In time they will settle into a softer, more natural feel and appearance.
Silicone gel implants are generally agreed to feel more natural than saline ones. As far as appearance goes, it
all depends on your personal tastes. Some women prefer to get a more naturally-shaped implant, while other women
might prefer the less natural round implant. How natural-looking the final effect of your breast enhancement
surgery is will be dependant on the size, shape and type of the implants.
You can read more about the different types of implants here.
You can expect some tenderness following surgery, and some women do find it quite painful to laugh or cough for
a couple of weeks after the operation. Generally, some pain relief will be taken for a week after surgery.
Normally you will be fine to return to work seven to ten days after Breast Enhancement Surgery, unless your job
is particularly physical, and requires much lifting and carrying.
Prices can vary quite considerably. A fairly average price in the UK is around £4,500, although many different
factors need to be considered, such as the reputation of your surgeon, the type of implants you choose, the
method of incision. The city, state or country to get your surgery plays a big part, too. For US or UK residents,
going abroad for your augmentation surgery can often be less than half the price!
So, which country to go to?
If you are traveling from the US, countries such as Mexico, Argentina, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic are
all superb, with some first-class surgeons and clinics. Generally speaking, for British medical tourists, countries
such as the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary will be a good bet, along with Belgium, Spain and Croatia.
Often, the best deals are found further afield, and for those prepared to travel a bit further, for instance to
India, Thailand or Malaysia, it can be possible to save two-thirds of the price, easily enough to cover the cost of
flights and accomodation.
